Gillespie is also very selective of the brands and types of bags it sells. “By far, our most popular brand is Louis Vuitton, and it’s the more common types like the monogram and the plaid Dalmier handbags that are selling very well.
Color matters too. While limited-edition models and bold hues may seem more precious, for the average Luxe.It.Fwd consumer, black is the shade of choice. Prices also range between $500 and $27,000 (from Louis Vuttion to Birkin) with an average spend of around $1,100.

“Everyone wants versatility in their bag and colors other than black just won’t fetch the same price,” says Gillespie.
Handbags have always been a big part of Sydney-based luxury consignment store Di Nuovo’s business, and founder Viktoria Barber says they “would probably have the highest turnover”.
She says that while there has always been a demand for authentic, quality pieces that retain their value and style, customers today are “much more concerned about durability.”
The store’s bestsellers — which Barber says often sell out in minutes — include Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Celine, Fendi, Bottega Veneta, Prada, Gucci and Chloe. Sharper brands such as Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler and Ulla Johnson are also popular, especially with young people.
It was a brown faux crocodile Vivienne Westwood number worth $1,647 that caught the eye of 22-year-old Samarra Ewing-Crellin on a luxury resale site, Communal changing room. The bag, which is part of the designer’s 1993 Red Label collection, is a smaller version of the one worn by model Naomi Campbell the same year.
Ewing-Crellin wanted something unique and with a story. The ethical consumption part also appealed to her.
“Buying vintage, when it’s original and not recreated, is good for the environment as well as being cool,” she says.
But how do you know you’re getting the real deal? Gillespie recommends buying from a reputable seller whenever possible.
“Look at online reviews and make sure the seller has been around for a while,” she advises. “Also look at the condition description and ask for photos.”
Also, be sure to do your research. “Retailers can overprice their items in marketplaces, so always look online to see how much the bag you want costs elsewhere,” says Gillespie.
Before buying my Gucci bag, I did exactly that and finally got a good deal. Although I got it through Facebook Marketplace, the receipt, dust bag, and bag branding stood the test of quality enough to convince me I got the real deal.
