State Farm Raises Funds for Backpacks

State Farm and caring local citizens are joining forces in hopes of raising funds to provide backpacks for 2,500 college students across McDonald County.

Spokeswoman Janice Bearbower said local churches have provided a few hundred backpacks, but student needs far outweigh supply.

With that in mind, Bearbower researched the options and found that fully stocked bags were available online at a much cheaper price than buying the items individually.

At a cost of $17.50, she is able to secure a backpack with a folder, composition notebook, sheet of paper, pencils, crayons, dry erase markers, scissors, glue, pencils, pens, an eraser and a pencil bag.

Bearbower shared this initiative with area businesses, organizations and residents and received enthusiastic support.

Many donors even challenged others to participate. Bearbower said local banks competed to make the biggest donation, along with elected officials who challenged others to raise funds as well.

“We won’t get anything out of it except goodwill,” she said.

The backpacks will be delivered in August and the deadline to donate funds for the backpacks is July 22. Those interested in donating can do so at State Farm in Pineville.
