Southside ISD will distribute free backpacks in accordance with the clear bag rule

The district announced it would be providing free backpacks to all students for the upcoming school year in a Thursday, June 23 news release. Southside ISD said it would distribute the backpacks during its Meet the Teacher night and first week of school. Dates are forthcoming too, according to his Facebook page.

After the mass shooting in Uvalde, Southside ISD did not allow backpacks on campus for the remainder of the school year. The district also did not allow purses or backpacks inside the Alamodome for her June 2 high school graduation.

According to its Facebook page, the district is working to update its student handbook to include any changes or questions that parents, students and teachers may have. It will be released soon, the district noted in the comments section of its free bag announcement.

If anyone has questions about the new policy, Southside ISD said they don’t hesitate to contact the district at 210-882-1600.

Southside ISD isn’t the only district taking precautions after the Uvalde shooting. Harper ISD, about 90 miles north of San Antonio — about an hour and a half drive — has implemented a clear backpack/bag policy for students in the 2022-23 school year, according to a social media post.

“When the parents started contacting us after the Uvalde shooting, wanting to know what Harper was going to do? Well, most of the things that need to be done, we’ve already done it,” said Bonnie Stewart, Superintendent from Harper ISD. “We’ve been really proactive over the past few years.”

Stewart said Harper ISD has its own school police department, a team of guards, installed security fencing around the majority of campus and installed bulletproof glass in all offices.

“One of the suggestions was see-through bags, so we did some research and decided that would be a good thing we could do to show that we’re doing something else,” Stewart said. “You know, if they want to get a gun and they’re going to get a gun, but that’s just another level of security and safety.
