Sept. 9—WILLIMANTIC — The Eastern CT Veterans Community Center will collect donations to fill 50 backpacks for homeless and at-risk veterans in the state on Saturday.
The collection of “Backpacks for Life” will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Jillson House Museum, located at 627 Main St.
Windham Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Diane Nadeau has teamed up with Backpacks for Life Coordinator Jamie DePaola to help veterans in need.
The following items are collected: shampoo, conditioner, bar soap with container, body lotion, sunscreen, insect repellent, shaving cream, razors (minimum two blades), deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss/cure -feet, socks, t-shirts, underwear, hand warmers, foot warmers, gloves, watch cap (hat), rain poncho, face masks, nail clippers, lip balm, hand sanitizer format travel, hairbrush/comb, body wipes, notebook, pens, mini flashlight with AA batteries, travel size child first aid kit, $10-$25 gift cards for food, feminine hygiene products , hair care products, face moisturizer, lip gloss, makeup remover wipes and cosmetic bags.
Additionally, monetary donations can be made to pay for each kit, valued at $50 each, or backpacks, valued at $100 each.
Gallon-sized stuff sacks are also needed to assemble the backpacks.
