Newark woman admits stealing nearly $94,000 worth of Balenciaga bags in the Hamptons


A Newark woman has pleaded guilty to grand larceny to stealing $94,000 worth of handbags from a luxury store in the Hamptons.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced the guilty plea for Basemah Davis on Tuesday, August 16, for stealing from the Balenciaga store in East Hampton in March.

“The message here is clear, organized retail theft in Suffolk County will not be tolerated,” Tierney said.

In addition to pleading guilty to robbery, Davis, 34, also pleaded guilty to felony possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance, the prosecutor’s office said.

Davis was arrested Thursday, March 3, after she and Jamal Johns, 26, Ali Harris, 28, and Wazir Rodgers, 25, all of Newark, New Jersey, and an as-yet-to-be-identified woman were captured. on surveillance video allegedly stole nearly $94,000 worth of purses from the store, the prosecutor’s office said.

The video shows a woman (who remains at large) entering Balenciaga and walking around the store looking at various handbags.

Shortly after, she asked a store employee to check if he had a shoe of a particular size.

As alleged in court documents, when the employee attempted to retrieve the shoes for her, three men and Davis rushed into the store and began grabbing luxury handbags from the shelves.

After taking several bags each, all five fled the store and drove off in a Dodge Durango, the prosecutor’s office said.

East Hampton Village Police Department officers located the fleeing Durango and began a pursuit. Shortly after, a state trooper spotted the Durango and initiated a pursuit.

The soldier chased the Durango for a distance but ended the pursuit due to safety concerns as the Durango was traveling at speeds over 100 mph and was observed veering into oncoming traffic lanes, documents show judicial.

The group was captured when smoke started coming out of the vehicle and it pulled to a stop on the Long Island Freeway where three people jumped and ran and two remained in the vehicle, according to court documents.

A subsequent search of the area led to the arrest of Davis, Harris and Johns, as well as the recovery of 34 of the stolen purses, the prosecutor’s office said.

An investigation to locate the unidentified woman is ongoing, officials said.

Davis will be sentenced on Friday, September 23.
