‘Made in Pakistan’ handbag line hits fashion weeks in Milan, Paris and beyond – Reuters

A line of handbags by Lahore-born designer Hirra Babar has been showcased at Milan and Paris fashion weeks in recent years. Warp describes itself as “a contemporary fashion brand aiming to warp the fabric of fashion by creating high quality abstract shapes and minimalist everyday fashion accessories”.

The flagship products are a line of ‘hexella’ handbags with a unique contemporary aesthetic:
“Hexella is a portmanteau made up of two words Hex and Bella meaning six-faced beauty. The name was first coined for our signature mini bag. Hexella Minibag was an attempt to explore the idea of bold, definitive, geometric shapes in fashion accessories, which led to defining the brand’s brand new aesthetic.

Speaking to journalist Sonya Rehman for Forbesthe designer explains the process and struggle to create a contemporary line of handbags that relied entirely on a Pakistan-based production process.

“Pakistan is one of the largest leather exporters in the world and it is unfortunate that we do not have a single commercial brand that sells high value products overseas,” Babar was quoted as saying. This involved training its team of artisans in Pakistan to not only match but exceed international standards, after the startup started in 2016.

The know-how is described as follows:
“Our collections are designed and crafted with careful attention and systematic processes and focus on reinventing leather stitching techniques while using only the finest materials such as full-grain goat leather and plated hardware. Part of Warp’s mission is to enhance and promote the manufacture of high-end leather accessories in Pakistan. The bags are handmade from the highest quality materials in Lahore, the cultural capital of Pakistan.

Babar and his team’s effort paid off, as the handbag line began to attract attention at the most prestigious fashion and accessories events on the world stage. According to Forbes,
“From its participation in Mipel (a prestigious leather handbags and accessories event) in Milan in 2018, to its presentation at Tranoï (a leading trade show) during three seasons of Paris Fashion Week in 2019 and 2020 , Warp has also been selected by the National Chamber of Italian Fashion to exhibit its pieces at Mipel in the Emerging Brands category.

Priced from $80 to $500, the handbags aim to innovate in design and aesthetics:
“Not following the usual design rules that govern the fashion industry, WARP stands out with its non-conforming aesthetic that speaks to the spirit of today’s confident young woman.”
