Boat captain sentenced to life imprisonment for death of 13 passengers

A Lagos State High Court sitting in Eti-Osa has sentenced the captain of a commercial boat, Elebiju Happiness, to life imprisonment for causing the death of 13 passengers.

Happiness has been charged with manslaughter by the police.

Judge Josephine Oyefeso said Happiness was found guilty on 11 counts.

Earlier, police told the court that Happiness committed the crime on July 29, 2020, after loading passengers from Kirikiri waterfront and heading towards Badagry. It is said that he lifted the transport fair halfway through the journey.

Police said he intentionally turned off his boat’s engine, refusing to continue the journey until passengers agreed to his new terms, adding that a strong wave forced the boat to capsize while the engine was running. off.

Meanwhile, two people lost their lives in an accident involving a commercial boat with around 20 passengers traveling from Ipakodo in Ikorodu to Victoria Island, Lagos at around 4am on Wednesday.

It was learned that those who died in the unfortunate incident were two female passengers.

The chief executive of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, confirmed the accident, saying that immediately after the accident, the water wardens and search team and LASWA rescue were mobilized to the scene, allowing the rescue of 15 people. living.

He added that a full investigation into the cause of the crash was underway.
